SKF is a world-leading provider of innovative solutions that help industries become more competitive and sustainable. Founded in 1907, SKF is represented in approximately 129 countries and has around 17,000 distributor locations worldwide.
We have a long history of working with industrial sustainability. It is an integral part of what we do every day. And we strive to create engagement throughout the business, not only by implementing sustainability on a strategic level, but also by encouraging the ideas and grass root projects initiated by our people around the world. Our largest contribution lies in providing clean technology solutions for the industrial transformation, and in developing more and more of our products to become lighter, more efficient, longer lasting, repairable, and, ultimately, recyclable. This in turn helps our customers reach their goals for sustainability and growth. Our offering around the rotating shaft includes bearings, seals, lubrication management, condition monitoring, and services.
Roughly 20% of global energy goes to overcoming friction. Through collaboration and knowledge sharing, and together with the industry and academia we work to drive the needed changes in society by creating reliable rotation and reducing friction. This co-innovation helps to push the boundaries in creating tomorrow’s technologies. Reliability, predictability and sustainability are what guides us in this work. With a large number of application, design, mechanical and electrical engineers – engineering is truly at the heart of our business. Our products are found everywhere in society. In fact, wherever there is movement, SKF’s solutions may be used. We are an important part of the everyday lives of people and companies around the world.

Manufacturing industry is the most important source of economic growth in a region or a country. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has a long tradition of offering world-class engineering education and industry solution packages that support the manufacturing sector. The Research Institute for Advanced Manufacturing (RIAM) was established by the University in May 2021 as an interdisciplinary endeavour to transform, enhance and upgrade the manufacturing industry. Our aim is to be a hub for world-class manufacturing research and knowledge transfer to contribute to economic growth in a global context.
Currently, the Institute brings together nearly 50 principal investigators and co-investigators, as well as more than 110 postdoctoral researchers, students and project staff. RIAM focuses on five research areas: Advanced Processing and Materials Technologies; Carbon-Neutral Manufacturing; Digital Manufacturing; Manufacturing Systems and Instrumentation; and Manufacturing Operations and Logistics. Under these areas, researchers from different departments and disciplines work together on new inventions and technologies. RIAM is also working closely with external institutions in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Europe to continuously improve industrial operations. These partnerships include studies on magnesium-based materials and the establishment of new research infrastructure.
