The Design and Management of Manufacturing Systems (DMMS) Center is dedicated to advancing knowledge and developing methods for cost-effective manufacturing of high-performance components. The center plays a vital role in enhancing efficiency and productivity in manufacturing while tackling modern challenges, including a competitive global market, a shortage of skilled workers with manufacturing expertise, the drive for sustainability, and the adoption of innovative methodologies and cutting-edge technologies. The centre focuses on manufacturing complex, knowledge-intensive components, such as automotive powertrain parts, by emphasizing precision and quality through advanced machining processes, digital tools, and information feedback systems to enhance accuracy, reduce waste, and improve operational efficiency.

The State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining technology (SKL-UPMT)

The State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining technology (SKL-UPMT) in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has been pioneering at the forefront of providing innovative solutions in optics design, ultra-precision machining, measurement, and precision mould making for some of the world’s most critical industrial applications. Our mission is to achieve technological advancement and knowledge transfer of ultra-precision machining technology to industry. We invite collaborations with industries, academic institutions, and research organizations.

The main research directions of the SKL-UPMT are:

  • Research and development of ultra-precision machining equipment and precision manufacturing equipment: Developing next-generation ultra-precision manufacturing equipment, leveraging the advancements in artificial intelligence.
  • Micro and Nano Machining Mechanics: Exploring the surface generation mechanisms of micro/nano structures to develop new theories and innovative processes for ultra-precision machining.
  • Advanced Ultra-precision Machining Processes: Creating novel machining processes and technologies to enhance the accuracy and performance of products in high-tech industries like semiconductors and optoelectronics.
  • Research and development of precision metrology and instrumentations: Developing next-generation precision metrology and instrumentation using artificial intelligence methods.
  • Interdisciplinary applications of ultra-precision machining: Expanding the scope of ultra-precision machining through interdisciplinary research, fostering innovation across various fields, and addressing the major national needs and improving the quality of life.
